The UNESCO Chairs Program and the Network of Italian UNESCO Chairs (ReCUI)

The UNESCO Chairs Program promotes inter-university cooperation and networking in order to improve institutional capacities through knowledge sharing and joint work. Launched in 1992, this program involves over 850 institutions in 117 countries, and supports the creation of UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN networks in priority sectors related to UNESCO areas of competence such as education, natural and social sciences, culture and communication. Through this network, research and higher education institutions from around the world pool their resources, both human and material, to contribute to the development of their societies and address their urgent challenges. In many cases, the UNESCO Chairs act both as think-tanks and as bridges between academic reality, civil society, local communities, the world of research and policy-makers. They are also useful for supporting political decisions, generating new innovations through research, launching teaching initiatives from scratch, contributing to the enrichment of existing university programs and promoting cultural diversity. In areas lacking expertise, UNESCO Chairs have evolved into hubs of excellence and innovation at regional or sub-regional level, and ultimately contribute to strengthening cooperation between developing countries.

As of April 2023, Italy has 43 UNESCO Chairs. The UNESCO chairs in Italy are organized in the Network of Italian UNESCO Chairs (ReCUI), whose spokesperson is currently Prof. Patrizio Bianchi.
